The Alfred A. and Blanche Knopf Library
Alfred A. Knopf in his office. Knopf Archive.
Alfred A. and Blanche Knopf founded the Alfred A. Knopf Inc. publishing house in 1915. Following their visit to Texas in 1959, the Knopfs agreed to give The University of Texas large portions of their library, along with the company's voluminous archive.
The Knopfs' library naturally incorporates copies of Knopf Inc. books, including many inscribed to the Knopfs by authors they published (Thomas Mann, Willa Cather, Henry Mencken, John Updike, and a host of others). The library reflects the taste and interests of its owners: books on American history, natural history, travel, cooking and wine, book design and fine printing predominate.
