The Gernsheims's original library of some 3,000 volumes formed the foundation of what is now one of the largest research libraries for the study of photography, film and their history. Presently totaling over 35,000 volumes -- including large runs of many primary journals and sourcebooks -- the library is accessible through the automated cataloging system of The University of Texas at Austin (UT Library Catalog). For those books and periodicals in the Photography Library, the UT Library Catalog indicates the location as "HRC-P." Books and periodical literature -- both contemporary and historical -- continue to be added annually.
