John Thornton

John Thornton joined Austin Ventures in 1991 and focuses on software investing and firm strategy. He became Managing Partner in 2005.

Previously, John was with McKinsey & Co., where he served clients in the U.S. and Europe. He has worked with companies such as Active Power, Dazel, Metasolv, Mission Critical, Motive, Pentasafe, TechRepublic, Tivoli, Vignette, and Waveset.

John received his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and his BA summa cum laude from Trinity University, where he graduated first in his class. He is a current advisory board member of Ballet Austin, a founding board member of the Entrepreneur's Foundation, and a former trustee of both Trinity University and the Austin Museum of Art, where he headed the strategic planning committee.

John's wife, Julie, is a past Ransom Center Advisory Council member, the President of Arthouse, a trustee of Art Pace, and a former trustee of Ballet Austin, where she ended her dance career. She is also a member of the Blanton Museum of Art advisory board.
