Frequently Asked Questions about the The Making of Gone With The Wind

When and where will the exhibition take place?
The Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin hosts the exhibition The Making of Gone With The Wind from September 9, 2014 through January 4, 2015. Admission is free; donations are welcome.

Will the exhibition travel to other locations?
At this time there are no plans for the exhibition to travel to other venues.

Will the costumes be on display?
The exhibition will feature three original gowns worn by Vivien Leigh as the beautiful and ambitious Scarlett O'Hara. The newly conserved costumes will be displayed together for the first time in more than 25 years. Donors from around the world graciously contributed more than $30,000 to support the conservation work, which will enable the Ransom Center to display the costumes safely in its fall 2014 exhibition.

Will there be guided tours of the exhibition?
Docent-led public tours of Ransom Center exhibitions are offered on Tuesdays at noon, Thursdays at 6 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.

To schedule a prearranged tour for groups of ten or more, or to alert Ransom Center staff of your visit, please complete a tour request form or contact hrctours@austin.utexas.edu.

I didn't know the Ransom Center holds Gone With The Wind materials. Would you like to borrow my collection or materials for this 75th anniversary exhibition?
Thank you for your generous offer, but exhibition materials will be drawn exclusively from the Ransom Center's collections, which includes more than 5,000 document boxes in the David O. Selznick archive, half a million photographs, more than 100 paintings, and five costumes.

Where can I obtain more information about visiting Austin for the exhibition?

How will donations be spent?
The goal is to share this exhibition and unique archival materials with the broadest audience possible. Donations will be used to increase awareness, publish a catalog highlighting exhibition materials, provide additional tours, and organize a symposium and other programs, including a film series.

I prefer to send a check instead of making my donation online. Where should I send the check and to whom should I make it payable?
Checks may be made out to the Harry Ransom Center. Please indicate that your donation is for the GWTW exhibition. The address is: Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas at Austin, P.O Drawer 7219, Austin, Texas  78713-7219.

Is my gift tax deductible?
Yes. Gifts made to the Harry Ransom Center are tax deductible in the year that they are given. The gift amount that is deductible for federal income tax purposes is the amount donated less the fair market value of benefits provided in return, whether used or not.
