Cover of The Dial, Vol. 73, No. 5 from November 1922
In 1922, Scofield Thayer, Eliot's friend and editor of The Dial, published The Waste Land and awarded Eliot the magazine's cash prize for writers. He also published an essay by Edmund Wilson on the poem's significance. In calling so much attention to the poem, Thayer hoped to position American writers as leaders of the avant-garde. |
