The short, lightweight, and loose-fitting style worn by these famous women was the product of a European reform movement of earlier decades. Indeed, women had been pressing for "rational" dress since the nineteenth century with little success. But once the reform became fashion in the 1920s, many women would wear nothing else. Manatt publicity photograph for the film Our Dancing Daughters, featuring Dorothy Sebastian, Joan Crawford, and Anita Page.
