Dashiell Hammett's exposition of his characters often involved abstracting them as geometric or stylized shapes. Such treatment underscored Hammett's half-despairing approach to the people in the modern city. Sam Spade's friendship with his assistant, the good-hearted and reliable Effie Perine, on the other hand, betrays some faith in humanity.
