Originally published as The Masses, The Liberator was co-founded in 1918 by Max Eastman, his sister, Crystal Eastman, and a group of writers and artists as a digest of worldwide Socialist political and cultural movements. As an intellectual concerned with the role of art in politics, Eastman served as editor until 1924. Pro-labor and sympathetic to the Bolshevik Revolution, Eastman believed art should avoid pretentious pseudo-intellectualism. These cover illustrations show the mixture of a strong political message and simple artistic form he favored. |
