America's not jazz crazy
Like so many "new" artistic movements, jazz was not universally embraced early on. Much of conservative America felt that it was, like the car, the radio, and the bottle, a threat to order, peace, and not surprisingly, the chastity and future of American youth. Of course, this familiar refrain would be heard again, over the Charleston, Swing music, Rock and Roll, and even now with alternatives like punk rock and hip-hop music. |
