A Tonic to the Imagination: Costume Designs for Stage and Screen by B. J. Simmons & Co., 1889-1959

Premieres & Revivals
Simmons not only costumed from a new set of designs, but would often use costumes several times (with alterations) for revivals of the same play or musical. With a vast stock of used costumes, the company would also act as a rental house. In some instances the leading players would receive a new design while the remainder of the cast used costumes "pulled" from the stored stock of past productions. For example, in Glyndebourne Opera's first decades, the company's costumes were pieced together from past presentations. With Glyndebourne now one of England's most affluent opera companies, this practice would be unthinkable today.
