Amid a group of Marines, three Korean villagers lift men on stretchers onto the back of a jeep.

"Each day, while fighting to hold the perimeter, Marines bless their luck when seeing the silent men who simply appear, half-smiling and never in fear, searching for the fallen whom they help when they can. If they find them only wounded, they lift each like a child, to carry him from the hills before going back once again. [Korea, 1950.]" Yankee Nomad, p. 295.
