Pablo Picasso and his family, on the front steps of his French villa, look on as a welder works on one of the artist's latest sculptures.

"La Californie's front steps . . . made an ideal workshop for the Welder fitting a scepter into the mailed fist of Picasso's warrior king . . . Picasso, Jan the boxer, Lump, chauffeur Janot, Claude, Cathy, Paloma and Jacqueline took ringside seats [to watch the Welder at work] until [he] returned to his foundry, [1957]." Goodbye Picasso, p. 65.
