Three-quarter portrait of a man, in a straw-hat, appearing to be deep in thought.

"He simply stood there--a mountain of a man around whose flag-crowned, straw-hat summit the everyday life of his delegation parted and swirled and then regrouped, but left him unmoved. Applauding to himself . . . whistling to himself . . . reflecting to himself--he appeared to be one of the loneliest of all humans on this teeming earth. And yet, he was contributing to the group effort of the convention. He was the Delegate. [August 1968.]" Self-Portrait: U.S.A., p. 47.
