"Two of the most powerful influences on medieval Russian iconography were the almost unbelievably lavish cassocks of Metropolitan Photius who dominated the Church for twenty-three years (1408-1431). Each cassock was heavily embroidered with gold, silver and pastel colored threads depicting scenes from the life of Christ. Thousands of pearls were added to one robe as outlines for every figure and design, especially a cross within which is the Cross, Jesus, Mary, St. John and two Roman soldiers." The Kremlin, p. 159. |
