Detail of a gilt and carved carriage wheel.

Prince Alexei Orlov presented Catherine the Great this golden carriage in 1795. Above each rear axle is a carved-and-gilt figure of St. George slaying his dragon, one set of which is seen here through the spokes of a carriage wheel.
