Letter from New York

TO: to Mr. David O. Selznick

DATE: July 8, 1939

FROM: WILLIAM HERBERT

SUBJECT: (Publicity matters -letter
divided by subject)

I have seen Hedda Hopper twice and she says she
wants to eat her words about Vivian Leigh. (It seems she
originally put on a big blast about an English girl being
chosen for the role of Scarlett.) She wants to see her and I
am stalling her because I still don't know what she'll say
and find that like Louella she often writes the wrong thing
even when she is well meaning. However, she is completely
sold on the girl and has been telling everybody that she gives
a great performance. It has even come back to me from fan
magazine editors who say "Hedda Hopper says that Vivian Leigh
is terrific in 'Gone With The Wind'." So I may bring them
together when Vivian gives her other interviews.
