The Woodward and Bernstein Waterate Papers

The Final Days

Note from Katharine Graham

April 1976

In response to excerpts that appeared in Newsweek the month before its publication, The Final Days received many scathing reviews as an unwarranted, personal attack on Richard Nixon. Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham sent Woodward and Bernstein a clipping of a favorable review by Jonathan Yardley in which Yardley recommends that many of the complaints about the book could be resolved if Woodward and Bernstein would place their documentation under lock and key, to be opened to scholars after a certain number of years.
