The Woodward and Bernstein Waterate Papers

The Final Days

Rhodes interview tape and transcription

1974

Congressman John Rhodes of Arizona provided Woodward and Bernstein with his personal thoughts and recollections of Nixon's final days in office, providing unique insight into the role played by the Republican Congressional leadership leading up to Nixon's resignation. In a 1974 interview, soon after Nixon left office, Rhodes relates his shock upon reading the White House tape transcripts. Mistakenly calling it the June 22 tape, Rhodes refers to the June 23, 1972 tape of Nixon and Haldeman discussing how to use the CIA to halt the FBI investigation into the Watergate burglary as "the smokin' gun."
