Beckett originally wrote this mime, Act Without Words 2, in French, but his English translation was published first. Although Beckett had asked for and received page proofs for his text, his corrections and addition were not followed in the publication. (He had earlier refused to accept payment for his contribution.)

This copy of Act Without Words 1 Act Without Words 2 is one of ten numbered copies with an original pastel and an extra suite of linoleum cuts penciled by the artist. This edition was limited to 200 copies and is trilingual with original French text, Beckett’s English translation, and the German version by Elmar Tophoven.

This is the first printing of Beckett’s original French text of Acte sans paroles 2 with a facing German translation by Elmar Tophoven. This volume also contains the first appearance in book form of Cascando, in its original French.

Other Beckett plays appearing in this two-volume, trilingual edition are: Waiting for Godot, Endgame, Act Without Words I, All that Fall, Krapp’s Last Tape, Play, Happy Days, and Words and Music. The corresponding English or French versions of the plays appear at the end of each volume.
