The play was performed for the first time at the Royal Court Theatre in the spring of 1976 during a Samuel Beckett season celebrating the author’s seventieth birthday.

Beckett wrote Footfalls soon after That Time, both of them autobiographical. Footfalls was written for Billie Whitelaw, who created the role in the production staged by the Royal Court Theatre in the spring of 1976 as part of their Festival celebrating Beckett’s seventieth birthday.
