Through Jean Reavey, the acting company Mabou Mines requested permission for a reading of The Lost Ones to accompany their production of Play and Come and Go. Beckett cabled his approval for a “straight reading.” The result proved to be a highly original dramatic presentation featuring David Warrilow and a female member of the Company, both in the nude. On 10 April 1975, Beckett wrote to Jean Reavey: “Sounds like a crooked straight reading to me.”

Although “Assez” is here labeled “unpublished,” printing of the first edition was completed on 19 February, and the edition was presumably available in the bookshops shortly thereafter.
