Robert De Niro Costumes to be Exhibited at The University Co-op

"Robert De Niro in Costume: Selections From the Archive", an exhibition of 13 iconic costumes from the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center's Robert De Niro collection will be displayed inside the first floor main entrance of The University Co-op from March 19 to April 1.

Actor, director, producer Robert De Niro donated his vast collection to the Ransom Center in 2006. With materials from the late 1960s to the present, the archive includes annotated scripts, notes, research materials and an extensive collection of costumes De Niro wore in his films.

The archive is still being processed and is not yet available to the public, but this exhibition of costumes offers the public its first view of the collection.

"De Niro is known for the intelligence and intensity he brings to his craft and for his uncanny ability to immerse himself completely in the role he is playing," said Ransom Center Curator of Film Steve Wilson. "Costume selection is a key element in the creation of his films, and the costumes presented in this exhibition reflect the broad range of characters he has portrayed."

The exhibition will feature costumes from 13 films, including "Awakenings" (1990), "Backdraft" (1991), "Great Expectations" (1998), "Meet the Fockers" (2004) and "Raging Bull" (1980).

"As a supporter of the Harry Ransom Center by having helped fund previous acquisitions over the years, our being a part of the effort to bring the Robert De Niro collection to The University of Texas was a natural for us," said University Co-op President George Mitchell. "The research value to the university will be invaluable, and we look forward to supporting this goal by displaying many of his costumes at The Co-op for two weeks in March."

The exhibition can be seen Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Co-op is located at 2246 Guadalupe St., and parking is available in The Co-op garage at 23rd and San Antonio streets.

The Ransom Center will also host the Robert De Niro Film Series this spring. The series includes screenings of "Greetings" (1968) on Feb. 20, "Bloody Mama" (1970) on Feb. 27, "Bang the Drum Slowly" (1973) on March 19 and "Mean Streets" (1973) on March 27. All screenings are free and take place at 7 p.m. inside the Ransom Center's Prothro Theater. Seating is limited.
