1943

Appointed a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, February 17th. He is stationed in the South Pacific for the next several years where he covers action on the ground and in the air, and ultimately the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri.

In February he is honorably discharged from the Marines.

In March he is hired by Wilson Hicks as a staff photographer for Life magazine. On March 30th, he is sent on his first assignment: to cover Iran where the Russians tanks were threatening Tehran. Just six months later, on November 4th, he lands his first Life cover with a story on Palestine.
