U.S. Political Conventions

Democratic National Convention, Chicago, August 24-29, 1968

View of gesticulating hecklers standing in a crowded amphitheater.

"Open conflict flashed across the Amphitheater floor when the Convention Chairman, Carl Albert--supported by Platform Chairman Hale Boggs--attempted to blast anti-war delegates down into their seats. But those hecklers were not kookie-yippie-hippie- professorial-draft-card-burning- anti-Viet-Nam-war fanatics. They were fully accredited Democratic delegates to their national convention . . . Chairmen Albert and Boggs--even with microphones--were shouted into frustrated silence. [Chicago, August 1968.]" Self-Portrait: U.S.A., pp. 170-171.
